Where are the kangaroos?

To clarify, where are the live kangaroos?  You know the animal that is synonymous with Australia like these other Australian icons:  Steve Irwin, Crocodile Dundee, vegemite….

We saw plenty of dead kangaroos on the side of the road being pecked on by big black birds, vultures and even a small fox but no live ones.

I think they no longer exist and must be extinct.
